Sea Change

The 2 rulings this morning by the US Supreme Court mark a pivotal sea change in the way forward for our country. The change in attitudes towards gay Americans in just the last decade is remarkable. And I think there is one main reason for this change. We all know someone who is gay.

When gay Americans started coming out of the closet 15 to 20 years ago, it put on face on what was till then hushed up conversations. "Confirmed bachelor" or "Old maid" were euphemisms used to describe many people who would be called gay today.

It is really hard to be a bigot when you are friends with a gay person. Or if a relative is gay. Actually most people I suspect today don't care whether someone is gay or straight. Just that they are a good person.

And that is how it should be.

  1. Gay Marriage advocates manage another arrow hit against the Bigotry Target.

DOMA is dead - and thank goodness.
Challenge to Favorable Gay Marriage Court Decision Failed.
Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom's status as "Father of California Gay Marriage" affirmed.
Supreme Court Justice Scalia not pleased.
Supreme Court Justice Uncle Thomas busy chewing gum during DOMA decision.
Supreme Court Justice Alito (the clown)? Did he scowl, purse his lips, roll his eyes or otherwise give us any clues?

Although I'm a life-long bachelor with no direct emotional ties to LGBT marriage issues, I have family, friends, acquaintances and those I support who will be affected and benefit from today's rulings. And to all of them, congratulations and best wishes on a fight worth winning that now appears to have been won here in California. Happy Wedding Bells to All!
